First Impressions That Stick
There’s a big green sign at Pralarn Port that says, “Welcome to Koh Samui.”
The first time we saw it, we were on holiday for David’s 60th and traveling from Koh Samui to Koh Phangan for a visit.
We were here for a holiday but were already enjoying the Island so much we were starting to toy with the idea of trying life on the Island on a more permanent basis, which is exactly what we ended up doing.
Island Life: Messy, Beautiful, and Addictive
Samui has a personality all its own. It's not polished like Phuket or Bangkok. But what it lacks in gloss, it makes up for in authentic charm, natural beauty, and a lifestyle that sneaks up on you.
Yes, there are a few quirks:
The traffic obeys more of a vibe than rules
You have to get used to losing power just as your toast is browning
Bureaucracy here runs on its own unique timezone and the rules can change from day to day.
But then there’s this:
Morning swims before the heat hits
Evening drinks with your feet in the sand or around the pool at home - usually around 27-28 degrees in the evening!
Friendly smiles from people who may not know your name, but remember your face
An energetic vibrancy that never seems to go away, but from which you can escape if you wish
And before you know it, the chaos becomes part of the charm.
From Dreaming to Doing
We didn’t just drift in and stay. We sold our home in NZ, sold our cars and quit our jobs then we came here and built a home.
We purchased from a developer in an early stage development and redesigned it to suit ourselves. We supervised the build, and lived through all of the challenges that go with building a new home. It wasn’t always easy but in the end we came out the other side with a place we love.
It wasn’t easy. We had to work our way through the legal, contractual and financial side of things and not long after we moved in we had to have a new kitchen designed and installed to replace the one that we had paid for from the developer as it was crap. Frustrating but in the end it was worth it financially and personally.
And it taught us more than we ever expected about how this island works, what to look out for, and how to do things right (or at least, less wrong!).
